Our family decided to become foster parents for the Franklin County Humane Society. A lady from FCHS came to our house last week to interview us to see if we would be a good foster family and to check out our fence. We passed inspection and someone called on Friday to tell us they have a puppy for us. She has to be quarantined for 2 weeks before coming to stay with us. Lucy and Miranda are very excited but Aggie is not so sure why we need another puppy at her house. Here are some photos of our first foster puppy.

So what’s the deal with foster parenting an animal? Do you keep them at your house until they are adopted? I’ve never heard of this.
The animal shelter here only keeps dogs about 3 days. So the humane society goes in and finds dogs that they think are adoptable, cleans them up and gives them shots and deworms them. Then foster parents keep them until we can find homes for them. Some of the animals might need to be socialized or need training before they are adopted. We take them to adoptatons every other Saturday at Petsmart. We have to interview perspective owners and everything. We adopted Lucy at a Petsmart adoptaton.
This sounds like a lot of fun, but seriously…what are the chances that the puppy will be adopted and you won’t end up keeping it for life?
When I spoke with Wayne, (who leads one of the adoption programs working with Petsmart), he had foster dogs that had so far been with him for 5+ years.
What did the humane society tell you about the length of the adoption process?
They do ask that we keep an animal until it gets adopted. They told me that usually puppies do get adopted faster than adult dogs. Also, we can put flyers up and post on petfinders.com and on blogs in addition to going to Petsmart every other Saturday. I don’t think we’ll have any trouble with Macy(that’s what Miranda has named her). The Humane Society pays for food, vet care and provides whatever we need(crates, leashes, etc.) Hopefully, we find an adoptive family soon but if not we can keep her. The biggest problem will be getting attached to her if she stays with us too long. But since we already have two dogs we know that we can’t afford to keep another pet.
